Beware the too-cheap $5k UTV - In Friday night's newsletter on scammers (read it here), I wrote, "I won't say that it's foolproof because that would be silly." I was referring to how our Farm Tender model works, and using it reduces the chances of getting scammed.

Well, as soon as I pushed send on the newsletter on Friday night, I found out that someone had been scammed through our platform. It was over a too-cheap $5k UTV, and it was a case that we didn't get to the person quickly enough, as they paid for it upfront only to find that it never existed.

The banks are trying to track it and will hopefully return the money. It's disappointing. I'd like to think that over the years, we have prevented hundreds of people from getting scammed by having us in the middle monitoring everything that occurs across our site.

One thing I failed to mention on Friday night was our payment system, or New Payment System (NPS), as we call it. How it works is we do the invoice on behalf of the seller to the buyer and take the funds into our trust account. Once cleared, the seller and buyer can exchange the goods, and when both parties are happy, we pay the seller less our commissions. So, if that buyer who got scammed had of used the NPS system, we would have returned the money. Of all the transactions that go through our platform, about 40 per cent use NPS. Please, to ensure something like this happens again, make sure you take up our NPS offer; it's no extra charge and gives you that next level of safety when transacting.
