Economies of scale - Most Farmers live on their Farms, but most of the businesses they use to buy and or sell things are located in the town or city.
It got me thinking what are the main Agricultural Hubs around the country, which large centres rely heavily on Agriculture as the centre of their inner economies. Here’s a list I assembled in no particular order.
Toowoomba, Dubbo, Rockhampton, Wagga Wagga, Ballarat, Horsham, Bendigo, Kadina, Mt Gambier, Warrnambool, Hamilton, Murray Bridge, Mildura, Loxton, Roma, Katanning, Esperance, Geraldton, Longreach, Albury/Wodonga, Swan Hill, Griffith, Shepparton, Broken Hill, Launceston, Moree, Tamworth, Alice Springs, Goondiwindi, etc.
My thinking is that Griffith, Mildura, Kadina, Roma, Katanning, Horsham, Swan Hill, Moree, Longreach, Goondiwindi, Esperance and Loxton would be placed from the list above that would rely on Agricultural to fuel their inner economies. Some of the other centres like Ballarat, Toowoomba, Bendigo, Rockhampton, Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Albury/Wodonga, etc are Agricultural Hubs but are less reliant on Ag to sustain their inner economies. They have other levers they can pull. These are the places that came to mind first, places I have been to and can picture in my mind. I bet I have missed some or got some wrong. What are some of the Agriculture hubs you would add or subtract and why? Reply to [email protected]
