Growth Spurts - As you know, the prices for Farm Land has changed so much in the last 30 years. But it's interesting to note that there were only two periods, one from 2011 to 2007 and another from 2015 to 2022 when prices rose sharply. Otherwise, growth has been minimal. This is going by the graph at the bottom of this page, ABARES data.
According to the data, over the last 30 years, Land prices have risen for 13 years (a 6-year and then a 7-year growth period). The other 17 years have been pretty stagnant.
2022 meant the end of the sharpest rising period ever, with a significant correction that would be classified as a slight drop. I find this data so interesting, and you just wonder where the graph is headed into the future.
It looks as though things might level out or drop off slightly. If you follow the trend, we could be in for a pretty stagnant five or so years, and it's just a matter of waiting for the next growth spurt. Farmers should study this graph and work out a strategy for the next 5 to 10 years. For those in the market to buy more Land, it could be a good period to do so. What has been your Land buying strategy in the last 30 years? And where do you see the graph headed in the next 10 years? Reply to [email protected]
