Me and the 9G - A Farmer told me how he ran the gauntlet rather than paying the insurance and rego on the Truck as he ran in and out of town to pick up the Fertiliser at Sowing time. He didn’t get caught.
It got me thinking of a story one Harvest when I was picking up the Field Bin from our most Northern block, and I had to play cricket that day, so I had to head the town way. I was driving the Chamberlain 9G Tractor, which had the ability to scoot along quickly, as many of you would know. And I was just about to flick around the corner into town when the Coppers came along.
I waved (I’m a waver), and they went on past, but when I got near the ground, parked and started walking to the Cricket Ground, the Coppers came back and stopped me. The old 9G had one of those black and white number plates on it and I knew what the Copper was going to ask me. And sure enough, it hadn’t been registered for over 15 years according to them.
Yep, we had to cop a $500 dollar fine for running the gauntlet, but as it turned out, we were probably still in the black for not having it registered for all those years, and we still didn’t register it after that. I’ll be the first to admit I’ve probably had a few close shaves driving Trucks and Utes underage and probably when I’ve had 1 or 2 too many beers when I was over 18, of course. So when I got caught that Saturday many moons ago, I had to cop it. I’m pretty sure I didn’t lose any points. Have you run the gauntlet and either been caught or had a near miss?
