Feast follows famine - The domestic Hay market is off-tap right now. All of a sudden, there is a huge demand for Hay and, to a slightly lesser extent, Feed Grain. It's always been a funny old market, the domestic Hay market, the reason being if there is plenty of green grass around, you have Buckley’s chance of selling any Hay. Buyers will only ever buy it if they need it. It's a feast or famine industry with no real in-between.
Most of the sales made through the Farm Tender site have, up until about 2 months ago where spot loads, Farmer to Farmer ones. Since then, Feedlots and Mills have entered the market. Therefore, the volumes have lifted, and there is a genuine concern that it might run out.
Back in the 2017-2020 drought in NSW and Queensland, it was panic buying; it's not quite at that point yet, but it's not far off it.
Sellers are rejoicing because they can clear some long-held stock. But the industry is watching how the season is going to pan out; with dwindling supply levels and the thought of having lower-than-expected new season’s supply, is making people nervous and is forcing their hand now. Every day without rain is affecting new season yields. Reply to [email protected]
