They want it all - The big Supermarkets are out to try and grab as much market share as they can, not only in the staples like food and grog; they have already entered Pet Care and Veterinary sector, and they are chasing prescriptions and chemist products, they have a bit footprint in gaming and gambling, Hardware too, and I am sure there are other things as well. They want it all.

Who knows, one day, they might even enter the Farm Inputs space.

I do know of people who avoid the big 2 Supermarkets deliberately by refusing to enter their door or buy anything from their subsidiaries, eg Petstock, BWS, etc. However, I find it easier said than done. To me, they are kinda like Telstra and the banks, a necessary evil that you dislike immensely but can’t go without.

They might want it all, but it also might make them even more unpopular. And at the end of the day, they didn’t kill off the Butchers and Bakers, well, not all of them, anyway. I was talking to someone whom I respect who has a bold idea to take them on in a small way, opening up small market-style outlets. This guy is a genius with logistics and reckons that’s where he can compete and beat. It’s just a thought at this stage, and if it goes any further, I will let you know. But we Aussies have a tendency to have great intentions of supporting the little guy, but when push comes to shove, it’s the price that normally wins out. What’s your opinion of the Supermarkets?
