Dropping the Ego - We are at the Cotton Conference on the Gold Coast, and it was the first day today. There are something like 2700 delegates. It’s pretty darn impressive.

I was talking to one person in the know, and he said there would be 5-600 Farmers (Cotton Growers) in the rooms. The rest is made up of people who support the Farmers and the industry.

When you get to a show like this, they always have a keynote speaker who talks about something other than Cotton. This time, it was an Ex-Fighter Pilot from the US named Daniel “Fuzz” Walker. Fuzz gave us an insider’s look at one of the most elite organisations in existence.

He gave an insight into the intensive training and how decision-making in a split second is the difference between a successful mission and not. One thing I picked up on is they are taught to be vulnerable and to strip back the ego completely. The reason is they must work together, and if there is a problem, they need to relay that problem instantly to the people working beside them, no matter who the cause of the problem is. It’s natural to protect ourselves from blame if a problem arises, but when you are dealing in split seconds, it’s paramount. So many learnings from how they go about their work. I think Ag would be an even better place if we could all drop our ego. What would that take for that to happen, do you reckon? Reply to [email protected]
