Investing in what we have - I read something the other day where the sandy but sometimes wet country around Esperance can be improved dramatically. They say, in this area it's better to renovate what you have rather than to go and buy more Land.
They are using Land improvement techniques, such as Tiling and Clay Delving. Now, I just want to point out that I know nothing about these techniques, and I stand to be corrected. Tiling is where they lay some form of drainage under the ground to drain the excess water from the paddock to a drain on the edge of the paddock.
Clay Delving is adding Clay to the sandy soils to improve their productivity and give the soil better structure, fertility and capabilities. It's really like rebuilding the soil to a certain extent.
But the crux of the story is, for them it’s been proven better to invest in these techniques to improve your Land in order to lift productivity. I've heard it's a hefty investment but one that pays and ranks above buying new country. Most Farmers are constantly improving their Farms, but I'm wondering if there are other big bang-for-buck investments you can make to increase productivity. I guess adding irrigation would be one example. Do you know of others? Reply to [email protected]
