Celebrating Muck-Up Day - I had a reply from a Wimmera Farmer, Tim Inkster, who spoke about the Farming group he is involved in. It's called the Wallup Ag Group. Wallup is a rich soil Cropping area 43km directly North of Horsham in Victoria.
The group has been running since the early 90's, and was originally a VFF group, which morphed into the Wallup Ag Group. They meet about 6 to 8 times per year to hear from Industry leaders, check out the trial results, and travel to the Mallee Field Days together at Speed. They also have muck-up day, where they go around on a bus with a few beers and check out all the stuff-ups each of their members had. They also take Ag students from the local Longerenong Ag College out to their Farms, show them around, explain their systems, provide advice, etc. What a wonderful thing to do.
They recently had a trip to the Netherlands to check out how they Farm, which Tim said everyone thoroughly enjoyed. He said it was interesting and an eye-opener to see how they operated under really strict conditions.
I know there are some Farming Groups around. But why aren't there more? And more like the Wallup Group that mixes it up with a bit of social, a bit of serious, some education and some educating. I love the model. What could you do to get a local group up and running? I mean, there might be the skeleton of an old group that you could reignite. And if you have a group, what are some of the things you do? Reply to [email protected]
