Only seeing everything in monetary terms - I started listening to the Boot Off Long On podcast featuring Chris Wheatcroft, who’s from a business called Rural West. I will listen to the rest sometime over the weekend. He mentioned in his rise through the ranks in the Ag space that, at one point, he was helping run a clothes shop in Perth.
One bit of advice he got was that you are not selling dresses on the coat hanger but to think of them at $100 notes on a coat hanger.
You’ll have to stick with me here because this is a bit left field but… What if we related everything on the Farm back to money? For example, the Tractor is worth $149,000. We could think of it as $149k and not a Tractor. And next year, when we have added another 500 hours to it, it becomes $145k. Or we are walking past the Ute, and we think of it as $45k rather than a Ute. Or the Ewes could be known as $200 instead of Ewes. It would be like walking around with a set of glasses on, and you see something, and the value pops up on your glasses screen.
So, for a start, you do an initial evaluation of everything on the Farm in monetary terms, log the info somewhere and train yourself to think only about what something is worth. It might give you a new perspective on what you are doing. It might not, either. I will leave it with you. Have a great weekend. Reply to [email protected]
