Works for some - I admire business people who successfully integrate two separate businesses and get them to work, either as one entity or as separate enterprises under one blanket.

I have seen it work and not work. I have seen a few successful Sheep studs buy a rival Sheep stud, and the move seems to cannibalise one or the other. When I was on the Farm, we had an instant where we started a separate stud that was run on our place with 3 fellow stud Breeding partners involved. It worked for a while, but then it started to cannibalise our own stud and, to a lesser extent, the partner's stud business; when we noticed this, we all abandoned ship. It sounded good at the time, but looking back it was the wrong thing to do.

Clear Grain bought the igrain online platform a while ago, with some people scratching their heads as to why. But I think it was a strong move because the Clear Grain model is built around "system" Grain, and igrain's model worked for on-farm Grain. So rather than bastardising the Clear Grain system, which works a treat as it is, and knowing the on-Farm side of storing and selling Grain was growing, they thought, why not have two systems under the one banner.

I dare say the move has paid dividends, and they can cover each aspect of the market, and each brand has a clearly defined purpose for Grain Growers. Well done. Have you seen instances where the incorporation of another business has either worked or not worked? Reply to [email protected]
